A case for smiles

Heartfelt Quilting & Sewing is joining with ConKerr Cancer to help make hospital stays as pleasant as possible for chronically ill children. It is our mission and theirs to brighten the lives of sick children in hospitals through homemade pillowcases. Making a pillow case is easy, rewarding, and it can have a positive impact on a child in need.

ConKerr Cancer, is inspired by many, many people.

By the brave children they serve as they battle cancer, terrible injuries and other life changing illnesses;
By the loving parents, families and friends who, despite their feelings of helplessness, care for these special children with every ounce of their strength;
By the amazing nurses, doctors and caregivers who work so hard to heal the children and their families – body, soul and spirit; and,
By our thousands of volunteers who give so selflessly of themselves to put a smile on a sick child’s face.

It’s hard not to be inspired by such an exceptional group of people, all working to make a sick child’s life just a bit brighter. We feel very blessed to share this work with all of you.

Pillowcase Construction

Use cheery fabrics for kids – colorful and fun as possible

Remember many patients are adolescent boys and girls, we always need pillowcases appropriate to teenagers

Cotton, flannel or polarfleece only

Standard Pillowcase

Supplies:

3/4 yard of fabric for pillowcase
1/3 yard of fabric for border of pillowcase

Sewing Instructions:

Cut body of the case 26 1/2" x 40 1/2"
Cut the border 10 1/2" x 40 1/2".
Fold the border in half lengthwise, with the wrong sides together, and press.
Place the right side of the border on the right side of the body of the case.
Stitch these together using a 1/2" seam allowance.
Place right sides of the pillowcase together. Stitch down the side and across the bottom.
Turn to the right side and press.
Wash the pillowcase thoroughly (to sanitize for hospital use)
Place each pillowcase in its own ziplock bag.

NOTE: Make sure to wash the fabric for the protection of the children with suppressed immunity.
